Shands at UF Cancer Hospital Garden of Hope
The Shands at UF Cancer Hospital will be a center of excellent cancer care and will also be surrounded by an oasis of native foliage, benches, trees and a lake - the Garden of Hope. The Garden of Hope will soon be introducted to our entire community. This garden will be a place for patients and their loved ones, employees, friends and community residents to find solace and serenity. The garden is a result of a vision shared by Shands HealthCare and the community in which it resides. The concept involves surrounding patients, families and our neighbors with an atmosphere of healing for the body, mind and spirit. [Listen to a Shands audio HealthCast about the Garden of Hope] The Garden of Hope is symbolic of the thoughtful quality of care patients will receive at the Shands at UF Cancer Hospital. Located on the grounds of the cancer hospital, the garden will provide relief to the senses through its use of water, sunlight and natural foliage. As visitors stroll past benches, trees and a lake, they will have time to pause, reflect and heal. [View an artist's rendering of the Garden of Hope] Patients, their families, visitors and employees who visit the garden will view tributes to loved ones living with cancer, those who have defeated cancer and memorials. The garden will be located on the southeast side of the cancer hospital. It will also serve as a community center for all area residents and will be the site of public events such as concerts and programs by Shands Arts in Medicine. [Learn how you can host a garden party to support the Garden of Hope] Contributions will include memorials and tributes such as pavers, honor wall plaques, trees and benches. Gifts to the garden can also be made through garden parties. Gainesville community leaders will host "garden parties" this spring and summer as part of the Raising Hope campaign to bring awareness to the plans for the garden and give residents a chance to donate to this new community asset.
Marilyn Tubb, former Shands HealthCare vice president of community affairs and co-chair of the Shands at UF Cancer Hospital Community Campaign, and Sam Holloway, a Gainesville businessman, are chairing the community campaign. Mary and Mark Wise are the honorary campaign chairs. Garden of Hope Committee Members
