Streetlight Program
On any given day at Shands Children’s Hospital at the University of Florida, more than one third of our kids are actually teenagers. These young people are at Shands to receive state-of-the-art treatment for a serious medical condition. That’s a big plus. But because these teens are in the hospital and may be many miles from home, they have lost their place in school and everyday contact with their friends. They may have given up on their hopes and dreams for the future and so much more. That’s a problem.. Shands’ Streetlight Program was developed to address these kinds of challenges. Streetlight is a support program for adolescents and young adults living with cancer, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease and other chronic and critical illnesses. It's difficult enough to be a teenager. When you add a health problem to the everyday difficulties of teenage life, it can complicate the process of growing up. However, many teen patients will tell you that it can also bring out the best in you. An illness may help you find strength you never knew you had.
