Pediatric Lung Transplants

The goals of the pediatric lung transplant program are:

  • Enhance the quality of medical services provided to pediatric patients
  • Decrease the cost of transplantation
  • Increasing the success rate of lung transplants

The team currently cares for more than 10 children who have received new lungs. The educational and emotional support the program provides to the family and friends of the children is also important to those who have received a new lung or are on the waiting list.

The Shands Pediatric Lung Transplant Program at UF is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals including:

  • UF thoracic surgeons
  • Pediatric pulmonologists
  • Pediatric intensive care nurses
  • Transplant nurse coordinators
  • Pharmacists
  • Social workers
