| Tension-Free Vaginal Tape
Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) is a condition in which
women may lose small amounts of urine while laughing, sneezing, coughing, or engaged
in other physical activities. Millions of women suffer from SUI.
Non-surgical options for the treatment of SUI include medications and Kegel exercises.
If these options are ineffective, surgery may be considered.
Incontinence surgery has come a long way in recent years. Previous surgeries for this
condition required a large abdominal incision, a minimum of t wo days in the hospital, and
a four-week recovery period. Today, Shands HealthCare offers a new minimally invasive
procedure called Tension-Free Vaginal Tape (TVT), which has many benefits compared to
previously used procedures. Patients tolerate the procedure very well.
TVT is a 30- to 45-minute outpatient procedure performed under local or general anesthesia
using two small abdominal incisions. Most patients are able to return to normal daily activities
within two to five days, and complete recovery is expected within two to three weeks.
Compared to patients who undergo the older procedures, patients who undergo TVT spend
less time in the hospital, have less discomfort, smaller scars, and a greater chance of curing
their problem.
