Hematuria (Blood in the Urine)

Hematuria simply means blood in the urine. The blood may be visible to the naked eye or detectable only under a microscope.

Causes

Some causes of hematuria, such as exercise, are not serious. But, since bloody urine may result from cancer or other serious problems (such as kidney stones, infections, enlarged prostate), a physician should be consulted.

Diagnosis and treatment

Your doctor may order a series of tests including urinalysis, blood tests, special X-rays and cystoscopy — a non-surgical procedure used to inspect the bladder and urethra. Ultrasound and CT scan examinations also may be needed. If there is no serious underlying cause, no treatment may be necessary.

In some cases, blood in the urine is the only sign of dangerous tumors or stones. Seeking medical attention when you first see bloody urine can lead to early treatment or possible prevention of serious conditions.
